Two NMRX Stations Start Using Extended
Platforms
Los Ranchos and US 550
Stations Offer Easier Boarding For Passengers
(Albuquerque,
NM –
April 15, 2009)-
Construction crews have completed work on two New Mexico Rail Runner
Express platforms in an effort to make it easier for passengers to
get on and off the train. As part of the
Rail Runner project,
these platforms have been
expanded to accommodate longer train sets to better handle
significant increases in demand for the rail service.
“These platform extensions will make the Rail
Runner more time efficient”, says New Mexico Department of
Transportation Secretary Gary Girón. “No more letting passengers off
the train twice. The platforms are now long enough to stop just once
at each station and deboard everyone at one time”
The station platforms at the Los Ranchos/Journal Center Rail Runner
station and the Sandoval County/US 550 Rail Runner station were both
extended by a
car
length to accommodate Rail Runner trains with four-car train sets.
“We’ve really had an overwhelming response since
opening service to Santa Fe – especially at these two stations”,
says Lawrence Rael,
Executive Director of the Mid-Region Council of Governments. “While
it may seem like a small adjustment or improvement, having an
accommodating platform is one of those things that makes taking the
train to Santa Fe that much more convenient and enjoyable. “
