Rail Runner starts service to Los Lunas
Los Lunas becomes 4th commuter rail station to be added to
the Phase One Rail Runner route
(12-11-06) - Service for the New Mexico Rail Runner Express between
Los Lunas and Albuquerque began this morning at 6:03 a.m. The parking
lot at the Los Lunas Rail Runner station was full, and there were
about 200 passengers on the first two morning trains leaving Los Lunas
for the 20.6 mile trip into Albuquerque.
New Mexico Transportation Secretary Rhonda
Faught said, “With the link to Los Lunas, the Rail Runner will
serve more New Mexicans with this extremely convenient form of
transportation. The Rail Runner plays an important role in the
New Mexico Department of Transportation’s mission of being
inventors and providers of a transportation system that serves
everyone.”
“I want to commend our construction crews and staff for putting
in many 12-to-14 hour days laying track and bringing the signal
systems up to compliance to provide service to the people of
Valencia County,” says Lawrence Rael, Executive Director for the
Mid-Region Council of Governments. “I’m extremely pleased that
through their hard work, we can now extend Rail Runner service
south of Albuquerque.”
Commuters on the Los Lunas to Albuquerque line will receive free
fares for the next three months between Los Lunas and
Albuquerque. Anything north of downtown Albuquerque is subject
to a fare cost.
The New Mexico Rail Runner Express began serving commuters
between Albuquerque and Bernalillo July 14 earlier this year.
Three stations in Bernalillo, the Los Ranchos/Journal Center,
and the downtown Albuquerque Station have been open since. The
service between Belen and Albuquerque is expected to start after
the first of the year.
