Nearly 6,000 Riders Used
the Rail Runner Last Weekend
Ridership Record Challenged
(Albuquerque, NM – May 29, 2008)-
The New Mexico Rail Runner Express gave 5,980 rides last weekend
during the first Saturday of Summer service.
That ranks as the second highest daily ridership figure
since the Rail Runner began service in July 2006.
The only other day that had more passengers was on
Friday, August 4, 2006 when 6,148 passengers rode the train –
three weeks after service began.
“With the record high gas prices over the holiday
weekend, more people chose to stay close to home,” says Lawrence
Rael, Executive Director of the Mid-Region Council of Governments.
“People were looking for things to do in the local area and
the Rail Runner provided a cost-effective transportation option.”
The New Mexico Rail Runner Express offered free
rides last Saturday to kick off the Summer Saturday service.
Beginning this Saturday and continuing each Saturday through
August 30, the cost to ride anywhere in the corridor will only cost
$2. Children under 10
years old can still ride free.
“There are so many great things to do right here
in our own backyard,” says Rhonda Faught, NM Secretary of
Transportation. “And you
certainly can’t beat the price.
For the amount you would pay for just a ½ gallon of gas, you
can ride all day throughout the entire corridor.”
The Summer Saturday schedule makes the Rail Runner
available from 8:18 in the morning to well after dark, with the last
train leaving downtown Albuquerque at nearly 10 o’clock at night.
