“A lot of people have had a chance to take
advantage of the three-month ride-free period on the Rail Runner
since we opened the corridor to Santa Fe back in mid-December”, says
Lawrence Rael, Executive Director of the Mid-Region Council of
Governments. And even though the free rides are coming to an end,
the good part is that they will now be able to use their train
ticket to connect to other modes of transportation – like buses and
shuttles – for free! So there’s still a silver lining even though
they’ll now have to pay for their tickets”.
The New Mexico Rail Runner
Express has carried more than 330-thousand passengers in three
months since completing Phase II of its passenger service into Santa Fe on December 15th
2008. The train provides commuter service within a 100-mile corridor
which connects the two largest metropolitan areas in the state -
Santa Fe and
Albuquerque, as well as rural communities in
the corridor. The Rail Runner holds the record for being the fastest
start-up of a commuter train service in the nation.
