New Mexico Rail Runner Express
Extends Service for Memorial Day Weekend
Train Will Run on Sunday and Monday of
Holiday Weekend
(Albuquerque, NM -
May 7, 2009) - To kick off the
unofficial start of the summer season, the New Mexico Rail Runner
Express will extend its operating hours to include Sunday and Monday
service for the Memorial Day Holiday weekend.
According to Lawrence Rael, Executive Director of
the Mid-Region Council of Governments, the opening of the New Mexico
History Museum in Santa Fe was a determining factor in extending the
service throughout the weekend.
“We have had a number of requests from people
wanting to use the train on Sundays,” said Rael.
“With the opening of the New Mexico History Museum and
several other events taking place throughout the corridor, this was
an ideal time to give it a try and see how well our extended service
is utilized.”
During the three-day weekend, the New Mexico Rail
Runner Express will operate on the current Saturday schedule.
The first train leaving Albuquerque in the morning is at 6:20
a.m. with five other trains leaving Downtown to the City Different
throughout the day. The
first train leaving Santa Fe in the morning is at 8:10 a.m. with the
last train of the day departing the Santa Fe Depot at 10:00 p.m.
The same Saturday reduced fare schedule will be
used for the special Sunday and Monday service.
A day pass between
Albuquerque and Santa Fe is $6, but can be purchased for only $5
when people purchase their ticket online at nmrailrunner.com.
“Memorial Day weekend is traditionally a weekend
when families spend time together and seek out summer activities,”
said New Mexico Transportation Secretary Gary L.J. Girón.
“With the extended hours for the holiday weekend, their
experience can begin from the moment they step foot on the train.”
The New Mexico History Museum
will open to the public for the first time on Sunday, May 24 at
noon. The museum will remain open until 6 p.m. on Sunday.
The museum hours will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, May 25.
Admission to the new museum, as well as to the other three state-run
museums in Santa Fe – New Mexico Museum of Art, Museum of
International Folk Art and Museum of Indian Arts & Culture – will be
free during the opening weekend. The New Mexico History Museum
is located at 113 Lincoln Avenue in Santa Fe, just behind the
Palace of the Governors.
The free Santa Fe Pick Up Shuttle located at the
Santa Fe Depot Rail Runner Station, will operate on a Saturday
schedule throughout the three-day weekend.
The Santa Fe Trails bus system will operate on a Sunday
schedule for Sunday, May 24 and Monday, May 25.
