Weekend lane closures in Los Lunas for road work and safety upgrade of Rail Runner crossing

Traffic at NM State Road 6 and NM Highway 314 diverted Friday through Sunday

(Los Lunas, 6-12-07) –  Los Lunas motorists traveling through the intersection of New Mexico State Road 6 and New Mexico Highway 314 will be diverted onto a side road this weekend as the New Mexico Department of Transportation and the New Mexico Rail Runner Express make much-needed improvements to the roadway and railroad track crossing.

“We’re doing more improvements in the area of railroad safety than ever”, says Lawrence Rael, Executive Director of the Mid-Region Council of Governments. “Having regular commuter service through the heart of New Mexico has really brought attention to track safety, which is very important throughout the state”, adds Rael.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation and the Village of Los Lunas are expanding the current intersection by adding a right-hand turning lane from New Mexico State Road 6 onto New Mexico Highway 314. In conjunction with that effort, the New Mexico Rail Runner Express is upgrading the track at the railroad crossing, in addition to the ongoing railroad tie replacement work in the area.

“This work is significant for two major reasons”, says New Mexico Department of Transportation Secretary Rhonda Faught. “Number one, motorists will now have a means of accessing Highway 314 right from State Road 6, which will make traffic flow more smoothly at that busy intersection. And number two, Rail Runner passengers and other trains will get the added benefit of a new and safer railroad crossing”.
