Lt. Governor Denish and Isleta Pueblo Governor Benavidez Break Ground for a New Rail Runner Station

New Station Should be Completed by Fall

(Pueblo of Isleta, NM – May 23, 2008) Lt. Governor Diane Denish and Isleta Pueblo Governor Robert Benavidez, joined by state and local transportation officials today broke ground to build the Isleta Pueblo Rail Runner Station.

“Having a station at Isleta Pueblo is economic development,” Lt. Governor Denish said. “Isleta Lakes and fishing area is within walking distance – two lakes, picnic shelters and a pedestrian path. I say, bring the family down for a picnic and don’t burn one gallon of gas.”

“We all feel the pain at the pump. But a recent study by the Department of Transportation and Mid-Region Council of Governments showed that as gas prices rose, so did the number of passengers getting on the train. People want an alternative,” Lt. Governor Denish said.

Construction on the Isleta Station will start in the next few weeks and is expected to be completed by late fall. The Rail Runner, which has become the fastest start-up of a commuter rail train in the country in the past 20 years, currently carries an average 2,500 commuters a day along a 50-mile corridor between the City of Belen and the Town of Bernalillo. Work has already begun on extending the Rail Runner route north to Santa Fe by the end of 2008.

“This is a very big day for the Pueblo of Isleta”, says Lawrence Rael, Executive Director for the Mid-Region Council of Governments. “We are grateful to Governor Benavidez and all of those who had the foresight to see the benefits this station will provide to the residents of the Pueblo and those living nearby. This station will serve as a valuable point of transportation, as well as a focal point in the Isleta community.”

“I am pleased that this station will not only serve employees who work at various business establishments on Isleta Pueblo, but the neighboring community of Bosque Farms,” Transportation Secretary Rhonda Faught said. “Families along the Central Rio Grande corridor can also use this station to access various recreational facilities nearby.”
