– The Rio Metro Regional Transit
District has scheduled a series of public meetings in October to
address a possible fare increase for the New Mexico Rail Runner
Express. This move comes in light of the upcoming discontinuation of
significant federal funds that are currently being used to pay for
Rail Runner service.
“This
is a critical time for the New Mexico Rail Runner Express”, said
Steve Shaw, Chairman of the Rio Metro Board. “While an increase in
fares may not make up for the complete shortfall, this is just one
piece that will help offset the loss of these federal funds.”
Before official action is taken on the fare
proposal, the public will get a chance to weigh in on the issue. The
following meetings have been scheduled specifically for public
comment on the proposed fare changes.
“This is just one of the options being considered
to increase Rail Runner revenues”, said Dewey Cave, Executive
Director for the Mid-Region Council of Governments. “The board also
voted to create a Fiscal Sustainability Task Force to study and
provide recommendations. That Task Force has already had its first
meeting, and will be meeting again in October to discuss further
suggestions.”
