Trash and Graffiti Cleaned in Rail Runner Corridor
Rail Runner passengers to get an eye-“full”- not an Eye-“sore” during daily commute
(6-29-06) - Starting today, clean-up crews will be out in full force erasing graffiti and removing unsightly debris in the corridor through which the Rail Runner commuter train will soon start carrying passengers. The crews, made up of about 35 state and city correctional inmates, will be concentrating their efforts in two different locations in the Albuquerque area;
“We want to make sure that Rail Runner passengers get a pleasant view of a side of the city that is rarely seen”, says Lawrence Rael, Executive Director for the Mid-Region Council of Governments. “Often, the view from a train does not show an area’s best face as trains typically travel along the more industrial byways of an area. We just want to make sure that people’s Rail Runner experience is a pleasurable one from start to finish.”
Before work could start, clean-up crews had to complete a Roadway Protection Training class. Clean up occurs through Tuesday, July 11th.
“A clean city is good for business”, says Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chavez. “Forbes Magazine named us the number one city for the cost of doing business, and part of that cost includes ensuring that our residents are proud of their city’s appearance. I’m a big fan of cleaning up graffiti and litter so I’m happy to partner in this effort to beautify the Rail Runner corridor.”
Rail Runner commuter service starts passenger service July 14th from Albuquerque to Bernalillo, with full service south to Belen soon to follow.
