Open House Looks at Bus Rapid Transit from Northwest Mesa to I-25
Kick off Meeting to Look at Taking Congestion out of East-West
Commute
(Albuquerque,
NM –
February 19, 2009) – This
coming Tuesday, the Rio Metro Regional Transit District is hosting
the first in a series of public meetings aimed at coming up with
different and better ways to move people across the river from west
to east. The meeting focuses on a Bus Rapid Transit Study that looks
at the Paseo del Norte corridor between Unser Boulevard and I-25. Based on current
land-use, the construction of a new river crossing is unlikely, and
the widening of existing crossings is extremely limited.
“Right now, a typical morning or evening work
commute between Golf Course Boulevard and I-25 takes an
average 20-minutes, and if there is some kind of incident the trip
can take in excess of an hour”, says
Dewey
Cave, Interim Executive
Director of the Mid-Region Council of Governments. “Over the next 20
years, this same trip is expected to grow to 45-minutes on average.
“
Tuesday night’s meeting will focus on improving
transit service between the Northwest Mesa and the employment
centers along the I-25 Corridor - specifically the Journal Center
area, the Los Ranchos/Journal Center New Mexico Rail Runner Express
station in the North Valley, and the Downtown Central Business
District/University of New Mexico/Central New Mexico University/
Hospital area.
“There are various transit options to consider
that might significantly increase capacity across the river to these
destinations”, said Isaac Benton, Rio Metro Board Chair. “We want to
look at options that can help establish fast, efficient,
maintainable travel times that do not deteriorate as our population
grows.”
