Ridership expands and so does Parking Lot at Rail Runner Station in Los Lunas

Parking lot work making way for more commuters and new transportation center

(Los Lunas, 4-30-07) –  There’s now more parking to accommodate the growing number of people riding the New Mexico Rail Runner Express to and from Los Lunas. The recent parking lot addition coincides with the first phase of construction of the new Los Lunas Intermodal Transportation Center – a nearly 16,000 square-foot building slated to open later this year.

"It's exciting to see the transportation center starting to be built at the Rail Runner station in Los Lunas," said Mayor Louis F. Huning. "And it's thrilling to know that so many people are traveling on the Rail Runner. We believe the expansion of the parking lot makes it easier to catch the train."

The work is part of the Village’s effort to centralize its transportation services in one general area – near the New Mexico Rail Runner Express Station, which opened to Los Lunas commuters this past December. The new parking lot, which adds more than 40-new spaces is paved and lighted, and includes a bus bay capable of accommodating three buses at one time.

“This is important work - not only for the Village of Los Lunas, but for the whole region”, says Lawrence Rael, Executive Director for the Mid-Region Council of Governments. “It signifies a commitment to providing convenient and efficient transportation for the residents of Los Lunas and all of Valencia County.”

Phase Two of the construction project will add another 120-parking spaces, and there will be a beautification effort that will include a complete landscaping package.

Currently, the Rail Runner lot is patrolled by Village personnel during hours of operation. Phase one of the parking lot construction is scheduled to be finished in the next week or so.
