Mid-Region
Council of Governments to address River Crossing Issue in 2035
Metropolitan Transportation Plan
First of three Public Meetings scheduled to
gather input on river crossing strategies
(Bernalillo, NM
– September 22, 2010)
-
The Mid-Region Council of Governments (MRCOG) is kicking off a
series of three public meetings on the 2035 Metropolitan
Transportation Plan. These upcoming meetings will focus on how the
Plan will address river crossings in the region. The first meeting
will take place Wednesday, September 29th at the U.S. 550
Transit Center in Bernalillo. Several alternative river crossing
strategies will be presented for public review and comment.
“It’s clear
that existing river crossings are not going to accommodate the
projected growth in this region”, said Bernalillo County
Commissioner and Metropolitan Transportation Board Chair Maggie Hart
Stebbins. “The 2035 Metropolitan Transportation Plan can address
this critical issue in several ways. It is important that residents
understand the options we have for keeping traffic moving across the Rio Grande.”
A number of
strategies will be presented at the public meetings, and will range
in scope from land use policies, to improving transit across the
river, to adding traffic lanes.
“We’re very
interested in what the public has to say about the future of
transportation in this area”, says Steven Shaw, Vice-Chair of the
Rio Metro RTD Board. “I want to encourage people to come out to this
meeting for the RTD Transit Advisory Council and get involved with
the Metropolitan Transportation Plan.”
