Rail Runner celebrates 300,000th Rider!

And the winner is...

(2-22-07)  This morning following the arrival of the 8:40 Rail Runner train at the Downtown Albuquerque Station, commuter Fred Mollerud became the 300,000th passenger to ride the New Mexico Rail Runner Express!

Fred Mollerud is surprised to find out he is the 300,000th Rail Runner passenger

The 51-year-old Belen resident says he’s been a regular passenger on the Rail Runner Monday through Friday for the past three weeks and loves it.

“It’s fast, efficient, convenient – and saves me a whole lot of money”, says Mollerud. “I like the fact that you can get on the train and have a nice social experience meeting and talking with people while someone else does the driving. There’s no stress – it’s great!”

“It’s encouraging to see more and more people like Fred discovering what the Rail Runner can offer in terms of ease and enjoyment of travel”, said Lawrence Rael, Executive Director of the Mid-Region Council of Governments. “He’s one of the many people whose finding out that taking the train is a lot less stressful than fighting morning rush hour traffic, not to mention cost-efficient and reliable.”

The Rail Runner, which has become the fastest start-up of a commuter rail train in the country in the past 20 years, currently carries commuters between the Town of Bernalillo and the City of Belen, with service to Santa Fe scheduled to be added late next year.

For the distinction of 300,000th passenger, Fred was rewarded with a goody bag of Rail Runner memorabilia, including a scale model of the Rail Runner Express, and a certificate to ride the train free for one month once the zone-based fares kick in April 1st.
